Published Dec 05, 2019Disney has released the first official trailer for its upcoming live-action remake of Mulan. The new film will arrive in theatres on March 27.
The Niki Caro-directed remake stars Liu Yifei, Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Gong Li and Jet Li, who can all be seen in the trailer.
The new film appears to be a direct translation from animation to live-action, albeit a grittier reimagining. Fans of the original film may notice some parallels in the remake: Mulan's lipstick application, her reflection in the sword and her action stance in fight scenes.
The original Oscar-nominated animated film was released in 1998 and featured original music from Christina Aguilera. The orchestral version of which can be heard in the trailer for the 2020 adaption.

In August, lead actor Liu Yifei (performing as Mulan) was widely criticized for her support of the Hong Kong police in the wake of protests against a proposed bill to have Hong Kong citizens extradited to China. Her comments sparked protests and boycotts, even inspiring its own hashtag #BoycottMulan on Twitter.
